Open Mixed Day

Tuesday 27 July - sponsored by Darra Motel

Once again the Open Mixed sponsored by Gailes members Bev & Eric Prosser from Darra Motel was a wonderful success.  There are always lots of wonderful trophies, wine for the raffles and goodies for all who play and lots of fun from Eric at Presentation time.

Darra Motel sponsors Bev & Eric Prosser.  Bev was sorry not to be able to play

on "her" day, but the arm in plaster says it all!!

There were also some terrific scores.  Division 1 Winners were Trish & Brian Brown with 48 points followed by K Rowley & S Mott on 47 points.  Division 2 winners were Bev & Ken Stone with an excellent score of 53 points.  Judy & Harvey Smith were runners up on 50 points.

Because of Bev & Eric's generosity it was a very successful day, financially and socially, with 18 happy pairs receiving balls in the ball run down.

Club Championships

The A B &C grade championships were held during July.  Congratulations to Ok Ran Hong our new Club Champion.  Ok Ran was runner up to Jill Cavangh last year and this year won through beating Vicki Jones in the final 36 hole match play.

Gailes Cup

THURSDAY 17 JUNE

This prestigious event is Queensland’s first Open Event for ladies.  Commencing in 1926 it is now in its 84th year.   It was a great success again this year - and not only because we didn’t get ONE drop of rain - with competitions for A B and C Grade players.   Ladies hit off from 8 am and the field moved very well throughout the morning with most ladies staying to enjoy lunch, drawing of the raffles and the trophy presentation.

Pat Sloan, from Brisbane Golf Club was the 2010 winner of the Gailes Cup.  Pat has been a supporter of many Gailes events and it was very pleasing to Gailes associates to applaud her win. Runner up was Lee Boyle from McLeod.

We were most appreciative to have Lyn  Hughes, a Board Director from Golf Queensland attend the presentations, speak to the ladies and present the trophy for the Best Gross to Gayle Stewart from Mc Leod.

To accompany the Gailes Cup (and A Grade only event) a new B Grade trophy, the Gailes B Grade Salver, has been donated by Phyllis Fourte and was contested for the first time this year.  It was just wonderful that the inaugural winner was Sheila Goodbun from Gailes who now becomes part of our Gailes Cup History.  Unfortunately Phyllis was unable to present the salver herself as she is currently in Europe, but it was great that her daughter Kylie Swanson was on hand to do the honours.  B Grade Runner up was Carol Montgomery.

Gailes ladies made a clean sweep of C Grade with Beryl Brennan winning and Lyn Lewis the runner up.

Bring and Buy Day 2010

Thursday 27 June

Thank you to everyone for all your contributions.  News that we had a field of 100 (boosted by 32 ladies from Pacific GC) created an air of urgency to produce more goods and IT WAS WORTH the extra effort.   We raised over $1300 (roughly $900 from stalls and $400 from raffle), one of the best results ever.

It was wonderful to see so many cakes and biscuits and such a variety of other crafts work and donations - from rag mats to giant boxes of cling wrap - both snapped up very quickly too!!  At the end of the day there was hardly anything left except some books and a few biscuits.

The committee ladies put much time and hard work to bring about this day and they have all done a great job.

Thank you also to Phyllis Fourte and Daphne Anderson who helped out with the stalls, raffles and tidying up afterwards.  It was good to hear the familiar voice of Andy calling the field.   A special thanks to Natalie for managing to provide lovely food from 12.30 to 2.20 p.m. - and still hot when the last ladies came in!!

It was a long day but there was still a good crowd there to clap and cheer the winners on the day who were:

Division 1 Lucille Tong and Sheila Goodbun 47 pts and Division 2 S Dobbie and L Skalski (Pacific) 46 pts.

Our major raffle prize was once again donated by Michael Dempsey from Normanby Hotel and the lucky winner of the $100 restaurant voucher was Sue Adams.  Mavis Lecky won last year and had a wonderful night out.

ASHLEY ONA

Before Ashley embarked on her overseas trip she contested the NSW 72 Hole Championship at Newcastle Golf Course.  Ashley shot rounds of 71, 68, 74 and 75 to WIN by 4 shots from Justine Lee (the Australian).  Congratulations Ashley!

Ashley will be in the UK from 24 May to 27 June competing in four tournaments which are all worldamateur ranking events, and then off to USA.  She has two tournaments in Scotland (including St Andrews), one in Ireland and the world amateur championships in England.   We wish her good luck and hope she gains good experience from these events.

SILVER PENNANT

The season is now finished.  The Gailes team did exceedingly well this year.  They won their first match which was against McLeod at McLeod.  They also won their last match against Redcliffe with a home ground advantage as the final matches were played at Gailes.  As usual our girls were out-handicapped but they always gave their all. Out of 8 teams we finished 6th so we are still in Division 1 next year.

A very big thank you to all the players and caddies and thanks also to those who helped out on the final day with hostessing, starting the fields, morning tea and catering.

Once again well done Gailes.

TUESDAY 11 MAY OPEN MIXED SPONSORED BY THE VILLAGE AT YERONGA

It was unfortunate that Ric Cohen, Manager of the Village at Yeronga, was unable to attend the presentations for this event. Ric has been a supporter of ladies golf for many years and sponsored days at numerous clubs and Queensland Senior Ladies events.

A gloomy looking morning turned into a wonderful sunny day for golf and a great day for all participants.  An extra bonus for Gailes ladies was to see Eileen Baird back at the Club helping Daphne Anderson sell tickets for our always popular wine raffle.  Eileen is not up to playing yet, but it was great to see her at the club, if not on the course.

President Mardi couldn't play and Vice President Carol's husband couldn't play, so, Brian and Carol paired up and look what happened - they won Division 1 with 48 pts.  Winners of Division 2 were Toni & Gunter Grossmann also with 48 pts.  Toni and Gunter won on a count back from Mardi & Don Barker.
